Cairo 1980

Cairo 1980 is a portrait of a city very much in transition.  Sadat’s “open door” policy reversed decades of Soviet leanings and turned to the west to modernize Egyptian society following the Camp David peace accords.  A look at the sleepy Cairo Stock Exchange image reveals a nation that has not yet bought into globalization - but is about to.  Half of Sinai was still under Israeli occupation.  Sadat’s assassination in October 1981 further disoriented an already pensive nation, yet there was no turning back.
